Robotics and AI for Smart Electronics Manufacturing

ICT Robot BMK

BMK sets new standards for high mix-low volume production of electronic assemblies with automated in-circuit testing

With the implementation of a robot-assisted in-circuit test system (ICT) for electronic assemblies, BMK presents a forward-looking solution for the automation of electrical testing processes. This system was developed on the basis of a research project funded by the Free State of Bavaria and specifically addresses the challenges of high mix-low volume production.

A wide product variety combined with manual processes in electronics manufacturing poses special challenges for electronics service providers – particularly in light of rising quality requirements and increasing competitive pressure from foreign providers.

BMK addresses these challenges with an automated testing approach. The testing concept, specifically designed for assemblies with low batch sizes, connects the robot unit directly to the test system. By precisely representing test procedures using a digital twin and employing AI-based recognition of electronic assemblies, a highly adaptive testing process is created. Seamless integration into existing production environments enables an immediate increase in productivity.

Compared to manual testing procedures, the robotics-based solution offers numerous advantages: It enhances process stability through standardized workflows and significantly reduces the risk of mechanical damage. A key reason is that the robot consistently grips the assemblies in the same zones and with uniform force. Additionally, the force applied during insertion and removal from the test adapter is monitored, minimizing mechanical stress and thereby contributing to improved product quality. At the same time, the continuous throughput ensures a noticeable increase in efficiency.

With the new testing system, BMK takes another step towards automation and digital transformation, laying the foundation for a future-proof, connected production environment – prepared to meet the growing demands of the market.
