Franzi's year 2021: From great successes to difficult decisions

You can follow us regularly on our news page to see what was going on at BMK in 2021. We also reported details on Franzi’s moth sailing competitions, such as the Foiling Week  and the World Championship on Lake Garda (link). As 2021 ended, we talked to Franzi about her personal ups and downs of the year. Continue reading to see what particularly moved her in 2021.

BMK: Franzi, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us so close to the end of the year!

Franzi: Of course! I'm so proud to be a part of the #BMKdelta campaign, that I will gladly take the time!

BMK: For many of us, 2021 was once again more tumultuous than we had hoped for. Nevertheless, at least some competitions took place again this year. What were your greatest successes in 2021?

Franzi: Yes, that's right. I was extremely happy that there were moth competitions again this spring. I could see my sailing friends again and I could finally "fly” out over the water once more after such a long break! In July at the German Championships at Lake Walchen, I took 1st place in the women’s competition and thus received the title of German Champion in moth sailing. I was unbelievably happy, because I did not expect this after such a long training break, but my hopes were still high. Two months later, at the World Championships on Lake Garda, I was not quite as successful and "only" took 3rd place. Under the circumstances at the time, however, I was also very happy about it and, above all, particularly proud of myself for having participated at all.

„The decision was not easy for me. “

BMK: You're referring to the loss of your father, who sadly passed away this summer and who was also your coach and mentor.

Franzi: Yes, exactly. That was the hardest experience I’ve had to go through so far. My father was not only my best friend, but also my mentor, my biggest supporter in challenging times, and my rock. Still, I try to focus on the positive things.  I'm incredibly grateful for all that he taught me and for shaping me into the person I am now. None of this will be taken for granted.

BMK: How did you manage to motivate yourself after this terrible loss?

Franzi: The decision was not easy for me, but I know my dad would have wanted me to keep going and participating in events. No matter how awful the situation felt, in the end I know I would have regretted it if I didn’t take part. Thus, I made the decision to sail the regatta in memory of him. I stayed focused on the task at hand and analyzed and solved problems. In the end, I simply tried to make the best out of it. Moth sailing requires my full concentration when I am out on the water and that is the best way for me to just escape and get away from everyday life.

„I am sticking to my plans for next year. “

BMK: Given the tough circumstances, third place at the World Championships is even more a reason to be proud of yourself. What other positive things can you draw from this year?

Franzi: I have managed to remain myself despite everything. Work, sports, and times of relaxation keep me structured and busy throughout the day, and I continue to stick to these plans for next year. The challenges of the last six months have made me grow incredibly as a person and with this positive approach – and my new boat???? – I want to start the new year off optimistic to make a difference again.

BMK: You have a new boat? Tell us more please!

Franzi: Yes, I wanted to use the new boat at the World Championships at Lake Garda, but unfortunately that didn’t work out. I look forward to using it this year though. It is even faster, and I can no longer use the excuse “it’s the boat, not me” :D. Now I will really have to bring out the best in me for an even better performance.

„Optimal preparation is crucial. “

BMK: Where and how will you make a difference in 2022?

Franzi:  I will participate again in the German Championship and the Foiling Week at Lake Garda. Afterwards it will either be to the European Championship in France or the World Championship in Argentina. I have not yet made this decision. The "how" is a little more complicated to answer. On the one hand, I hope that I can achieve an even greater performance with better equipment and my new boat, but on the other hand, preparation is crucial in all competitions. I must be strong, not just physically, but also mentally. Having a strategy for the race is also important. When do I sail defensively and when should I sail offensively? How do I react to spontaneous occurrences during the race? What weather conditions, such as wind or rain, do I have to consider?

BMK: It sounds like you are already well-prepared for the coming year and for any challenges that await you! We are very happy that we can accompany you again on another adventurous year and create together a delta! Thank you, Franzi!

When it gets challenging, we thrive.
