Communication Solution for Smart Grids

Smart Grids hold great potential savings for the consumers. Surveys for example confirm that just the purposive commerce of electricity would lower the consumption up to 5%. The major innovation in regard to the intelligent networks is the capability to distribute the peripheral generated electricity to specific local consumer. To consider this functionality in combination with flexible electricity rates helps to get a clear idea about the potential cost savings in connection with time-independent appliances.

The key to unlock this potentials is network communication. For that reason BMK developed a communication solution, called Smart Grid Controller (SGC) based on a customer specification. The SGC is the central element between E-Meter, electricity supplier, consumer and the intelligent home utilities. This module is capable to support all major technologies, like serial communication with the meter, LAN (10/1000 Mb) and PLC (Power-line communication). An enhancement to wireless information transfer via MBus is possible due to the modular design of the product. As a result the SGC could be applied as central communication unit for all E-Meters in a building.
